Somehow acquired my debit card number and ran up an impressive run of fake charges today...
first up where 2 $130 +/- bill payments to an AT&T self-serve kiosk in Texas (I live in Vermont and haven’t left the state since Christmas), then they tried to buy a new iPhoneX
and then they tried to by $450 worth of god-knows-what from Target’s online store and then, to cap it off they tried to spend over $2000 in tickets with Delta airlines. All the charges are reversed and/or declined, but I hope the fuckers get nailed for it. I still don’t know how they got my card info, I *JUST* got a new card less than 20 days ago and I haven’t even used it that much.
I mean Jezus, they din’t try to buy ANY car stuff! Not even a rental!
PS: Isn’t chip+pin supposed to prevent these sorts of issues?

retailers are half assing it and not encrypting their data.
in the last month did you have any random $1 charges? Happened to me last month, someone did 2 $1 charges then tried to charge 1k for tickets.

Nope, checked back through, didn’t see any small random charges... they went straight for the big stuff.

We had a couple of those small ones. Chase caught them and we shut it down right away.

One reason I will never, ever use a debit card for purchases. Credit card or in-person cash only.
If something happens, I can file a dispute, end of story, not my money out of pocket.

My wife’s credit card was used today to buy a $6 scrunchie, then a $250 gift card - both from Urban Outfitters. This happens to her twice a year it seems.
Also, airline tickets? Seems like a bad idea to buy those with a stolen card, no?

It’s happened to me a couple of times. The last time it happened it was grabbed at a gas station. The alert popped up after they tried to buy several thousands of dollars of jewelry over the phone.

Any debit card worth having has the same fraud and no-liability protection as a credit card bearing the same logo (Visa, MasterCard).

I haven’t used this card at a gas station at all, and the only place other than local businesses that I frequent often that I have used it at is Old Navy... I suspect that’s my security breach, unless my local farm and yard store got hacked...

Problem is their investigations tend to drag on, and in that process you’re still out your own money.

There have been cases where they found card skimmers inside of stores, so it might not have been the cashier. On the other hand, a waitress was caught with a card skimmer and several cashiers have been busted taking snapshots of credit cards or the transaction screen at the drive- through.

I actually managed to get my credit card sniped a few weeks ago. Thankfully it has such a low limit that when they attempted to get something expensive online (probably a TV) it ran it way over its limit, and caused it to scream “fraud, fraud!”
